Industrial Engineering is the design and development of system and process improvements in order to increase efficiency. It is often referred to as “human engineering” due to the frequent interaction with people involved in the processes. Time, cost analysis, risk management, and human factors are all necessary knowledge for Industrial Engineers to make changes and improvements that benefit the company as a whole.

Lillian Gilbreth created the field of Industrial Engineering by tying her psychological knowledge to her husband's Mechanical Engineering work. She was the first female engineering professor at Purdue University and inspired the role of the wife in the movie "Cheaper by the Dozen".
